Backup? A total mystery (for many)

Last March 31st was World Backup Day.

World Backup Day has been celebrated for 22 years now, and it is important to emphasize the necessity of always making a copy of your data to preserve it over time and in secure locations.

The decision to establish this day originated from a post on Reddit, where a user expressed despair over losing online documents and regretted not having performed a backup.

Even today, according to research by Backblaze, one-third of people have never performed a backup of their files to an external medium or to the cloud (via the internet).

In Switzerland, more than one in two people have lost data considered important at least once in their lives, and 68% bitterly regretted not having thought of it sooner.

This is why backing up is an indispensable gesture—as well as a quick and simple one—to save documents, photos, conversations, and content of all kinds that represent our work, our memories, and our world of loved ones.

Making a copy of what you own online is a true lifesaver in case of device loss, malfunctions, viruses, and more, for both individuals and companies.

For those who, having read this article, have realized the risks and are about to proceed with their backup, here are 4 useful tips for the future as well:

    1. We must do it regularly, not postpone it, and set fixed periodic deadlines. Or use the automatic systems of our devices.
    2. Do it immediately after acquiring or creating important documents, photos, or videos.
    3. Choose the most suitable method for our needs (external media, data synchronization programs, cloud services); it doesn't matter which one, but do it!
    4. Store it on external media while taking care of them. If it is a cloud backup, pay attention to not disclosing access data and, above all, to remembering it.
