Tips and risks of online shopping

Shopping online is convenient, fast, and often cost-effective. A single click is all it takes to have a new appliance, a pair of shoes, or a gift for a grandchild delivered to your door. But amid so many opportunities, there are also hidden risks, scams, and digital traps. This is why it is important to learn how to shop wisely. It’s not about always being suspicious, but about paying attention, just as you would at a physical market.

Where is it truly worth buying?

Today, almost all major Swiss retailers have an online store: Digitec, Microspot, Manor, Brack, Mediamarkt. In addition to these, there are international platforms such as Amazon, Zalando, or Aliexpress.

The advice is simple: for products of a certain value (electronics, appliances, watches, eyewear), it is better to buy from official retailers or recognized sites. The lowest price sometimes hides a lack of warranty, refurbished products, or even counterfeits.

    Beware of fake discounts

Many sites show seemingly irresistible offers: "70 percent off today only." But often the starting price is inflated, or the promotion is permanent.

There are portals like toppreise.ch or preispirat.ch that help compare real prices and understand if it is truly a bargain. Google can also be useful for getting an idea by searching for "price history."

    Secure payment methods

Reaching the checkout is the most delicate moment. It is best to avoid advance bank transfers to foreign accounts. The most secure method remains the credit card with a protection system (e.g., 3D Secure), or PayPal, which offers a certain level of protection in case of problems.

    Watch out for fake sites

An increasingly common trap is copycat sites with names very similar to the official ones. They promise huge discounts but ship nothing or sell fake products.

    Always check:

That the address begins with “https” / That the site name has no errors or strange additions / That there is an “about us” or “contact” section with clear references / That reviews are realistic and verifiable

    And if something goes wrong?

Swiss law offers various consumer protections, but it is often difficult to enforce them with foreign sellers. If you do not receive the goods or something different arrives, the first step is to contact the seller immediately. If they do not respond, you can open a dispute through PayPal or your bank.

For purchases in Switzerland, you can also report the issue to SECO or contact a consumer association.

Let’s shop better, not just more: Online shopping is not an evil; on the contrary, it is an extraordinary convenience, especially for those who live far from major centers or have little time. But like anything, it must be done intelligently. A golden rule? If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. It’s better to miss out on an opportunity than to lose money, time, and trust.
