The operating system is called SwALPS: Swiss Autonomous Low Power System. It was developed by CSEM, the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology in Neuchâtel, one of the most advanced research centers in Europe. SwALPS is designed to do one thing: consume as little as possible. Every function, every notification, every update is optimized to use the minimum amount of energy. Apple Watch uses watchOS, a complex operating system full of applications, capable of doing a thousand things—but one that forces you to recharge it every night. Tissot made the opposite choice: fewer functions, but the right ones, and a battery that never ends. What does this watch do? It counts steps, measures distance traveled, and calculates calories. It displays notifications for calls, messages, emails, and WhatsApp on the small display below the six o'clock position. It alerts you with a vibration. You can see who is calling, read the first few lines of a message, and decide whether to reply from your phone or ignore it. It has a compass, altimeter, barometer, weather, and chronograph. For those who go hiking in the mountains, these functions alone are worth the price of the watch. What it doesn't do: it doesn't measure heart rate, it doesn't make phone calls from the wrist, it doesn't install applications, and it doesn't support contactless payments. If you are looking for all that, the Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Watch remain the right choice. But if you are looking for a real watch, with real hands, real materials, and essential smart functions without the anxiety of daily charging, the T-Touch Connect Solar is in a category of its own. Let’s talk about materials. The case is made of titanium. The bezel is ceramic. The glass is scratch-resistant sapphire. The dial is tactile: you touch different areas of the crystal to access functions. Two side buttons and a crown complete the controls. Tissot invented tactile crystal for watches twenty years ago. The software will no longer be updated, the battery will be degraded, and Apple will suggest the newer model. The same goes for Samsung, Google, and Huawei. Smartwatches are consumer electronics. They have a life cycle of three, four years at most. The Tissot T-Touch Connect Solar is designed to last. Tissot states it clearly: in ten years, it will do everything it does today. The SwALPS operating system is built for longevity, not for novelty. The materials—titanium and ceramic—do not degrade. The sapphire crystal doesn't scratch. The solar power supply doesn't have a battery that wears out every 500 charge cycles. It is a watch that ages with you, not instead of you. The price starts at approximately 995 francs with a silicone strap, and 1,095 francs with a titanium bracelet. It’s not cheap. But compare it with an Apple Watch Ultra at 899 francs that will need replacing in three years. In five years, the Tissot will have cost you less. And on your wrist, you will still have a Swiss Made watch, not a glass rectangle with a swollen battery.
