(Well-deserved) holidays are the perfect time to relax and enjoy your free time, but there are some financial pitfalls that could ruin the experience. One of the most common risks is using your mobile phone abroad on international roaming without a plan that includes this option. In particular, if you are planning to use a data connection, it is essential to take precautions to avoid nasty surprises on your phone bill upon your return.

In Switzerland, unlike member countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area, our SIM cards do not offer the "Eurotariff." This means that if you do not have a subscription that includes international roaming, you could incur high costs for calls, SMS, and especially data usage abroad. This can turn simple internet browsing or app usage into a very expensive experience.

The first thing to do is check if your operator offers international roaming packages that can be activated for the duration of your holiday. Most Swiss operators offer monthly data package options that allow you to use a mobile data connection abroad at a fixed price. These packages are generally convenient and can prevent unpleasant surprises on your bill.

Before leaving, contact your operator to check the available options and choose the roaming package that best fits your needs. Make sure you understand the terms and limits of the package, such as the amount of data included and the countries covered. This way, you will be able to use your mobile phone abroad with peace of mind, without having to worry about excessive costs.

If your operator does not offer affordable roaming packages or if you prefer a different option, you can also consider purchasing a local SIM card in the country you are visiting. This solution can be particularly advantageous if you plan to stay abroad for a long period. Remember, however, that purchasing a local SIM involves a temporary change of phone number and may require additional configuration on your device.

Regardless of the solution you choose, it is important to be mindful of your mobile usage during your trip. Avoid downloading large files, streaming videos, or using applications that require an intensive data connection unless you are covered by an adequate data package. Use free Wi-Fi whenever available to reduce mobile data usage. In conclusion, international roaming can lead to high costs if the right precautions are not taken.
