Two WhatsApp accounts on the same phone: the trick that...

It allows you to use, for example, a business number and a private number. WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business are your new allies.

Two WhatsApp accounts on the same phone: the trick that...

I know dozens of people who walk around with two phones in their pockets. One for work, one for private life. Two chargers, two cases, two subscriptions. The personal phone rings while you are responding to a client on the company one. In the evening, on the nightstand, two devices to recharge. An inconvenience that no longer makes sense in 2026. Because the solution already exists; it is in the phone you have in your pocket right now.

The point is this: many people want a second WhatsApp number. Those who have a business SIM and a private one. Those who live between two countries and have a Swiss number and an Italian one, or Estonian, or American. Those who want to separate work messages from family ones. Until recently, the only way was to have two phones. Today, all you need is a smartphone with two SIMs and to download a second application.

The first thing to know: most smartphones sold today are dual-SIM. Including the one in your pocket. Many people don't know this. Your iPhone 14, 15, 16, or 17 supports two numbers: one on a physical SIM and one on an eSIM, the virtual SIM that activates without a plastic card. Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, OnePlus—the vast majority of Android phones do the same. Some models even accept two eSIMs, without any physical SIM. If you don't know if your phone is dual-SIM, look in the settings under “Cellular” on iPhone or “SIM Manager” on Android. If you see the option to add a second number, your phone is ready.

Second thing to know: standard WhatsApp only accepts one phone number. You cannot register two numbers on the same application. And here is the trick.

It’s called WhatsApp Business. It is a separate, free, official application developed by the same company, Meta, that makes WhatsApp. You can download it from the App Store for iPhone or the Google Play Store for Android. Search for “WhatsApp Business” and you will find it immediately. The icon is similar to the WhatsApp icon, but with a “B” in the center.

WhatsApp Business was created for companies, but nothing prevents you from using it as a second personal WhatsApp. It works exactly like the WhatsApp you know: messages, photos, videos, voice notes, calls, video calls, groups, statuses. The interface is identical. The difference is that you register it with a different phone number than your main WhatsApp.

Here is how to do it, step by step.

First: make sure you have two active phone numbers on your smartphone. The main SIM and the second SIM, either physical or eSIM. If you already have an active business number or a foreign number, you are set.

Second: open your phone’s app store and search for “WhatsApp Business.” Download it. Installation takes less than a minute.

Third: open WhatsApp Business. The app will ask you to enter a phone number. Enter your second number, the one you haven't already registered on standard WhatsApp. The app will send you a verification code via SMS to that number. Enter the code and you’re done.

From this moment on, you have two WhatsApps on your phone. The classic green one, linked to your main number. The green one with the “B,” linked to the second number. Two separate chats, two contact lists, two different profiles. You can set a different name and profile picture on each. Work messages arrive on one, personal ones on the other. No confusion.

An important detail: notifications for the two WhatsApps are separate. You will clearly see which app the message is coming from. On iPhone, you can even assign different sounds to the two applications, so you know instantly if a colleague or your nephew is writing to you.

A tip for those using the second number for work: WhatsApp Business has a few extra features compared to standard WhatsApp. You can set an automatic welcome message for those who message you for the first time. You can create a catalog of products or services visible on your profile. You can set quick replies for frequently asked questions. If you are an artisan, merchant, consultant, or freelancer, these features save you time every day.

For those living between Switzerland and another country, this solution is particularly useful. Keep your Swiss number on standard WhatsApp for friends, family, and banking. Keep the foreign number on WhatsApp Business for contacts in that country. Everything on a single phone. No more carrying around a second device.

A warning: do not register the same phone number on both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business. Each number goes on only one app. If you try to register the same number on both, the first account will be deactivated.

One last thing. Does this solution also work with Telegram? Yes, but in a different way. Telegram allows you to manage multiple accounts directly within the app, without downloading a second application. You go to settings, tap your name, and you will find the "Add Account" option. For Telegram, therefore, the problem doesn't even arise.

Quick update: For a few days now, it has been possible to add a second number within WhatsApp, but managing them simultaneously can be less immediate and simple compared to using the Business version as a second number.

Two numbers, two WhatsApps, one single phone. Put the second cell phone in the nightstand drawer. And enjoy one less tangle of chargers in your life.
